Locality: | concentrated deposits of heavy sand, Fire Island National Seashore, New York |
Description: | Red-black sand composed primarily of red-brown almandine garnet and black magnetite. The heavy weight of these minerals caused the sand particles to separate into layers beneath lighter weight sand particles. The black magnetite sand is magnetic. 27 grams total. From my personal collection; collected ca. 1999 |
