Description: | Flat plate of dark-brown goethite with radiating fibrous structure. Goethite formed by the decomposition of the serpentine bedrock was mined as iron ore on Staten Island beginning in earnest around 1830 and continued until the 1880s. From my personal collection; collected in 1938 |
